Winter Dress Styles

By Sara Antonuccio
When you think of winter and dresses, only one style likely comes to mind: sweater dresses. While we do love sweater dresses, we want to help you think outside the box when it comes to dresses that are fit for winter weather. To get you started, here are some of our favorite winter dress styles:

Sweater Dress

It wouldn’t be right not to talk about sweater dresses. Yes, you already know they’re a winter staple, but do you know how many options you have? There are cable knit, oversized, long, short, and fitted sweater dresses, just to name a few. A maxi turtleneck sweater dress is a sexy date night look, and an oversized sweater dress with a pair of tights and boots is a cute look for a quick trip out of the house.

Coat Dress

Think royalty, like Kate Middleton, when you think of a coat dress. They combine the structure of a coat with the flare, length, and elegance of a dress for a classy, sophisticated piece that’s fit for everything from business meetings to brunch. Don’t forget a pair of fleece-lined tights to keep out the winter chill, and maybe a base layer top underneath your dress as well for added warmth.

Velvet Wrap Dress

Velvet is winter’s favorite dressy fabric. Go to any holiday get-together this season, and you’re bound to see at least one velvet dress or skirt in the mix. Wrap dresses are also a long-standing favorite, and combining the two results in a look that’s worthy of the most elegant holiday parties. Midi or longer is a good length for a winter dress, and three-quarter to full length sleeves are best.

Sweatshirt Dress

A sweatshirt dress, like a sweater dress, is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a dress version of your favorite sweatshirt. It’s like taking that oversized sweatshirt you lounge around in and making it an official dress, complete with a hood and pockets. What could be better for casual outings and evenings spent at home?

Corduroy Dress

Corduroy isn’t a fabric we always give enough credit to. It’s a bit retro, but haven’t you heard? Retro is in. Corduroy is a heavier fabric that will keep you warm, and when it makes up a dress it’s durable and good for everyday wear. Wear a midi corduroy dress with a pair of tights, or a mini dress with a sweater underneath.

Winter doesn’t rule out dresses, and you have more options for the season than just sweater dresses. Add a few of these styles to your closet and you’ll be dressed to impress, no matter the weather.
